The Ghana National Peace Council has decided not to take sides in the debate on whether President Akufo-Addo should assent the anti-gay bill into law or not.
Speaking on the matter, Chairman of the National Peace Council, Rev Dr Ernest Adu-Gyamfi said the council has taken a decision to stay neutral.
He said the Council is monitoring all developments and will step in to play a mediating role when necessary.
“There are several issues that have come to us that people expected to take sides, but realized it was important to remain neutral when they later came for conflict resolution.
“We are waiting to see how things will unfold, so we know if to mediate/intervene in the event of a conflict,” Rev Dr Ernest Adu-Gyamfi told TV3 in an interview.
Ghana’s anti-gay bill has been passed by Parliament this month after spending three years in the house.
The bill will become law and functional when it is assented by President Akufo-Addo.
Since it’s passing, several people including human rights lawyers and activists have raised concern, insisting that it is obnoxious.
They have appealed to the present to throw out the bill with the argument that a person should not be jailed for engaging in homosexuality.
