Southold Housing Strategies: Accessory Dwelling Units

Q&A to follow

Presented by Leslie Kane Weisman, Southold Town Zoning Board of Appeals chair, Government Liaison Officer Gwynn Schroeder and Doug Hirst, Long Island Housing Partnership Construction Program Coordinator. The panel presentation includes explaining what an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) is, some of the pros and cons of ADU’s, and what is currently allowed in Southold Town.  It will conclude with some ideas about how we could expand the use of ADU’s to foster more intergenerational and workforce housing opportunities in Southold. Doug Hirst of the Long Island Housing Partnership will explain how to apply for significant grants that are available to eligible Southold Town homeowners to renovate or legalize an existing ADU or build a new one. ADU funding is limited, so if you are at all interested you should attend this very informative session!

A Question & Answer period will follow the presentations. From the LIHP website: The Long Island Housing Partnership invites eligible applicants to apply to the Plus One ADU Program (The “Program”), an initiative to create and improve accessory apartments in the Town of Southold. By working with local governments, the Program will provide grant funds and support low- and middle-income single-family homeowner occupants who wish to create a new accessory apartment or improve an existing accessory apartment that needs to be brought into compliance with local and state code requirements. Depending on the property and what the locality permits, ADU’s may be small, basement apartments, garage conversions, or other permitted units.Funds are provided through the New York State Housing Trust Fund Corporation.

The maximum grant available is $125,000. https://www.lihp.org/adu.htmlhttps://www.lihp.org/Content/ADU_Guidelines_Southold.pdf
