EAST WENATCHEE – The City of East Wenatchee is pleased to announce the adoption of Ordinance 2024-02, a groundbreaking measure designed to streamline the construction of accessory dwelling units (ADUs). The ordinance is purposed to enhance housing affordability and diversity.

The ordinance introduces several key changes aimed at removing barriers and simplifying the ADU construction process. Property owners are now free from the constraints of a base minimum lot size requirement, granting them greater flexibility to undertake ADU construction projects across various residential areas, provided the projects adhere to the maximum lot coverage limits.

In a notable shift from previous regulations, residential lots that meet setback and lot coverage standards can now accommodate up to two ADUs, thereby increasing housing options within existing neighborhoods. The removal of the owner occupancy requirement allows property owners greater freedom in using both the primary residence and ADUs, offering enhanced flexibility in rental and occupancy arrangements.

The ordinance eliminates the previous requirement for lots to be subdividable, giving property owners more leeway in pursuing ADU construction. Moreover, the city is excited to introduce preapproved ADU construction plans through the Building Department later this summer. These preapproved plans will expedite the development process by providing property owners with readily accessible blueprints that meet all building codes.

Mayor Jerrilea Crawford expressed her enthusiasm for the new ordinance, stating, “Ordinance 2024-02 represents a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to address housing affordability and diversity in East Wenatchee. By removing barriers and fostering innovation in ADU construction, we are creating opportunities for residents to enhance their properties while contributing to our community’s housing needs.”
