Steve Sunderman of Roanoke’s Terrazia PC Architecture is the winner of the city’s Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Design Competition, according to a news release.

The competition is a collaborative effort between the city and AIA Blue Ridge aimed at promoting affordable housing options and encouraging aging in place within the community.

ADUs are limited-size dwellings built on existing residential properties that offer a unique solution for those seeking more affordable housing options or looking to provide additional space for guests, loved ones, or rental income.

A recent change in the zoning code has expanded opportunities for ADUs to be built throughout the city, making them an option for residents, according to the city’s news release.

The ADU Design Competition, held in September 2023, was made possible by funding from AARP. Twenty entries from civic-minded architects and designers were received. The designs were judged by a panel of community members and design professionals.

The other winners of the competition are:

Second place: Derek Cundiff, Cundiff Architecture, Inc.

Third place (Tie): Haley Kellam, Dwell Design Studio; Helen Jadlowski and Laura Parrish, SFCS, Inc.

The winning designs, ranging from just over 300 square feet to almost 800 square feet, provide a variety of options for residents interested in building ADUs. The winners have been awarded the production of construction documents of their designs, which can be found on the city of Roanoke ADU webpage at planroanoke.org/accessory-dwellings.

“The City of Roanoke is committed to fostering livable communities that cater to the needs of all ages,” said Katharine Gray, principal planner. “We are thrilled to see such innovative designs that will not only enhance our neighborhoods but also provide valuable housing options for our residents.”

“AIA Blue Ridge appreciates the opportunity to collaborate with the city, and support the construction of accessory dwelling units,” added AIA Blue Ridge President Nick Wade.
