The city of Huntsville is considering allowing the construction of accessory dwelling units for elderly family members needing care, children returning from college or long-term renters in certain neighborhoods.
The Huntsville Planning Commission approved an amendment to city ordinances to allow the structures in three different zones in the city. The amendment still must be approved by the city council.
The move is considered a solution to a growing affordability problem in Huntsville. The dwelling units or ADUs cannot be used for transient occupancy, short term rentals such as Airbnbs or small businesses. Only two people would be allowed to live in the ADUs at a time.
