If you are lucky enough to be a guest at this Kirkland waterfront home, this is where you’d likely get to relax and unwind. But the question is — would you ever want to leave?

This 1,200-square-foot Accessory Dwelling Unit features two en suite bedrooms up- stairs, a laundry room, a two-car garage, and an open kitchen and great room space that opens with folding glass doors to a large deck. In addition to the sweeping views of Lake Washington and the Seattle skyline, this home also features an elevator.

Thielsen Architects, Willkens Construction, and the team at LeeAnn Baker Interiors of Seattle are responsible for creating this dream guest house.

The backside of this ADU serves as the retaining wall for the main home. The open living space sits two stories above a garage.

Inspired by Nature and the Northwest

Designing spaces with function, balance, and beauty in mind can be challenging. The team at LeeAnn Baker Interiors nailed it.

The full-service design studio was founded in 2003 by LeeAnn Baker Steding, a University of Washington grad who also attended the New York School of Interior Design and worked with designers and architects in Manhattan. She has more than 20 years of experience in the field, and her work as won numerous awards and accolades, and has been featured in books and magazines.

She and her team work on projects throughout the Pacific Northwest, and in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, and Hawaii. Creating Northwest elegance is one of her specialties.

“The results are visually stunning and reflect the hues and simplicity of the Pacific Northwest,” according to her website.

Let’s Talk About the Rug

A stunning rug has the power to ground a design like an anchor and can also be “functional art for your floor,” according to Michael Andonian, owner of Andonian Rugs.

This guest house features several rugs and runners from Andonian Rugs, which has publicly accessible showrooms at the Seattle Design Center and in Bellevue’s Spring District. The Bellevue location also serves as the hub for additional services such as cleaning, repair, restoration, and pad customization.

“It’s difficult to imagine how rugs in the showroom will look in a space,” Andonian said. “So we offer free trials and delivery to help you find the right rug for your interior.”

The handmade Tufenkian Jackson Firewood Rug made of handspun bamboo silk is featured in the living space, an abstract representation of the water and trees that surround the space.

Andonian Rugs often works in tandem with designers such as LeeAnn Baker’s team on projects. The name is synonymous with beautiful, imported, modern, and traditional area rugs from around the world, the owner added. His family has been in the rug business for 100 years, and he’s passionate about his rich Armenian heritage that connects him to his business. He’s even more proud that his oldest daughter, Chiara Andonian, is now managing the Seattle Design Center Showroom and is the first woman in four generations to be committed to the family business, which traditionally has been a male-dominated industry.

“My grandfather would be so proud to see his great-granddaughter carry on the family legacy,” Andonian said.
